On Election Night in the nation’s capital, the Dallas Stars defeated the Washington Capitals 6-5 in a wild scoring contest between two elite teams. While matching a season-high of six goals, two key players, Jason Robertson and Mikko Rantanen, had historic nights to power the Stars to a much-needed victory as the team continues chasing Utah and Minnesota for the top spot in the Central Division.

Jason Robertson records one of the fastest hat tricks in Stars history

No one may ever touch the NHL record for the fastest hat trick ever recorded, which Bill Mosienko achieved in 21 seconds back on Mar. 23, 1952, with the Chicago Blackhawks. But scoring a natural hat trick in just 5:43 is pretty extraordinary all by itself.

Robertson gave the Stars a comfortable lead with three straight goals in the opening 5:43 of the second period, recording the ninth-fastest hat trick to begin a period in NHL history. Moreover, the 27-year-old recorded the third-fastest hat trick in Stars history, coming short of Tom McCarty’s 5:15 from 1984 and captain Jamie Benn’s 5:17 in 2018.

Overall, Robertson has had a stellar career in Dallas and will once again be a free agent in July 2027. As the only Stars player to record multiple 40-goal seasons in the salary cap era, his presence in the lineup is almost irreplaceable, and his scoring barrage in the second period is just another showcase of that.

Mikko Rantanen reaches 800 career points in Stars victory

As the 10th overall pick from the 2015 Draft, Rantanen had a second-period goal that turned into his 800th career point. The one-time Stanley Cup champion tallied his 324th career goal, making him the third-highest scorer from his draft class, while also becoming the third player to reach 800 points.

Although he is chasing Connor McDavid (1,260 points) and Mitch Marner (839 points) for the top spot from the 2015 Draft, he does have a championship ring, something neither McDavid nor Marner has.

Before landing with the Stars, Rantanen had 681 points in 619 games with the Colorado Avalanche, good enough for a 1.10 points-per-game average. After a brief stint with the Carolina Hurricanes, where he recorded just six points in 13 games, Rantanen returned to his impressive scoring pace with the Stars.

In 99 games with Dallas, the 30-year-old Finnish winger has 113 points, which equals a 1.14 points-per-game average. He’s currently outproducing his totals in Colorado, but as he gets older, it may be harder to keep up at the same pace. However, maintaining a career average of 1.09 points per game is nothing to scoff at.
