Time To Face Reality And Look Ahead, Dallas Stars Fans

This may be a bit premature, but the time has come to give up the jig and face the facts: with the Dallas Stars current situation, making the playoffs just moved from slightly probable to highly unlikely. A 4-0 roasting from the Edmonton Oilers has them staring down the barrel of a fully-loaded offseason ahead.

The irony of it all is how their playoff hopes came to die: a loss to the Oilers, the third worst team in the NHL. The Dallas Stars were scored on by former Star Derek Roy and could not crack a goal on 29 shots against former backup Richard Bachman. So, all in all, it was a good night for some revenge from former Stars. On the other hand, the Stars looked a bit sluggish and never really attempted to get anything going.

With the loss, the Stars playoff hopes shift from a 0.8% chance to a 0.2% chance all in the constraints of 60 minutes.

Now, with just seven games left in the 2014-2015 campaign, the Dallas Stars will need nothing short of a miracle and then some if they want to punch their ticket to the postseason. So basically it boils down to this logical scenario:

Next: Dallas Stars Get Chances, but Fall to Edmonton Oilers 4-0

The Dallas Stars will need to go 7-0-0 to finish their season. All of these wins must come in regulation. This is not impossible, but with the way the Stars played Friday night and facing a back-to-back on Saturday, they may very well be looking at another loss in the next 24 hours.

The Calgary Flames will need to finish their stretch with a record looking something like 3-1-3 or worse. That would pin them tied with the Stars at 96 points to end the year, along with 39 ROW’s a piece, the Stars would go advance due to their advantage in the season series between the two teams.

The Winnipeg Jets would need to falter and end the season on a 2-4-1 skid, leaving them with 95 and one point less than Dallas. The Jets have won seven of their last nine, so the odds of this happening are slim to none.

Also to mention, the Stars’ loss tonight gives a free pass for the San Jose Sharks and Colorado Avalanche to hop back into the “hunt.” If the Stars had won, it would have put the final nail in both teams’ coffins. So, this scenario comes to pass rather simply, right? Heheh, whatever y’all think.

“We still believe that maybe we have a chance if we run the table, so we just have to put it behind us and get ready for tomorrow.” -Shawn Horcoff

If you want to continue and believe in the playoff hunt, more power to you. There is no pain or fault in continuing to hope until game 82, but the facts have been laid out to us, Stars fans… and they are not pretty. I’ll continue to “believe” as I’m sure you all will as well, but the offseason is nearing, and the Dallas Stars’ have become the new favorite candidate to embrace it early. The loss Friday was a major blow, but a loss Saturday night would be utterly disastrous. Whatever happens, let’s make sure to not forget the team we support night in and night out. The offseason is only a time to get better, and if Jim Nill knows how to do anything, it is to make a splash come July 1st.

Brace yourselves, Dallas Stars fans. The long haul is closing in.
