Dallas Stars Luckily Finishing Hardship As Other Teams Start

The Dallas Stars will face off with the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night. The Stars are drastically undermanned, but it did not stop them from gaining a win against the Florida Panthers on Thursday night in the shootout.

Though the Dallas Stars desperately need points in a constricting playoff race, they may not be able to surface a win against a red-hot Lightning club who have won five of their last seven contests.

Even though the Stars may not be able to pull off two points understaffed (though with the Dallas Stars 2014-2015 season playing out the way it has, anything could happen), they gained some good news on the injury front.

“He looked good. The plan is to progress him, and I would say hopefully we are looking at Tuesday.” -Lindy Ruff

Superstar forward Tyler Seguin, who will miss his eleventh game Saturday night since being injured by a “gutless” check on February 13th, has been progressing extremely well with recovery and looks to be back in the lineup soon.

Seguin, who was in the running for the league lead in goals before the injury, currently sits with 29 goals and 59 points through 55 games this year. With Seguin back in, the Stars will likely gain a heavy burst of offensive flow and will look to use it to climb back into a tight race for the postseason with little time remaining and no ground to give. To make matters worse, the Stars lost their best defenseman Trevor Daley for the next 2-4 weeks, making their chances of a comeback even slimmer.

On the other hand, it seems like it is time to pay the piper for some other teams. Over the past 48 hours, two superstars have been knocked out for substantial amounts of time. These two superstars happen to be members of teams that rest in a similar position as the Dallas Stars.

  • The first is Winnipeg Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien. Byfuglien currently has 42 points for the Jets this season through 65 games played and has yet to take a tardy slash on his attendance record. That attendance record is about to get very messy, however.

Byfuglien was seemingly hurt on an awkward play in a game against the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday night. After leaving the ice and staying in the locker room for the entirety of the game, the final prognosis came out that Byfuglien would miss 2-4 weeks with an upper body injury. Worst case scenario with regards to the estimate, Byfuglien would miss 12 of the team’s final 17 games. Best case scenario, Byfuglien only misses six games. But those six games are against the NHL’s elites. These six games include a date with the Nashville Predators, Tampa Bay Lightning, San Jose Sharks, Florida Panthers, and two with the St. Louis Blues. All of these teams are either secure in a playoff spot or inching towards one, and losing your hottest defenseman cannot be the best news.

The Jets currently occupy the second and final wild card seed with 76 points, while the Los Angeles Kings trail close behind with 74 points and a game in hand. Either way, this is not the time for the Jets to go cold.

  • The second is Colorado Avalanche young and talented forward, Nathan MacKinnon. MacKinnon took a puck to the foot on February 22nd, but nothing came of it. He took a second puck Wednesday night to the same foot, and had an MRI Thursday that revealed he had sustained a broken foot. With the fracture benching him for 6-8 weeks, he will miss the rest of the season and only play in this calendar year if the Avalanche make the postseason. MacKinnon has 14 goals and 38 points this season, and has contributed well to the Avalanche’s overall success on offense.

The Avalanche rest in sixth place in the wild card race with 67 points, leaving them one point behind the Dallas Stars and nine points behind the Jets for the final wild card spot. They face a back-to-back with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild this weekend, and will be minus the services of the 2013-2014 Calder Trophy winner.

The Dallas Stars still sit eight points out of a playoff spot with only eighteen games left in their season. Time is growing slim, and losing Daley is a big shot to the chances. But with the help of Tyler Seguin, anything may be possible.
