The Dallas Stars Updated Playoff Standings; More Teams Fall
The Dallas Stars just do not know the meaning of the word quit. It may be their true poise finally showing, it may be their sense of desperation finally kicking in. But they have not quit and it does not look like they are planning on doing so anytime soon.

After handing off two separate leads in an emotional and rather physical game against the Calgary Flames, the Dallas Stars held their ground in a extra-time game that ended with Tyler Seguin sniping home a shootout winner and Kari Lehtonen shutting the door in the crease. The Stars clawed their way to a 4-3 shootout win over the Flames, gaining two points in the playoff race and snagging some ground on the Winnipeg Jets who slipped up on Tuesday night. The Dallas Stars are now 9-3-0 in the month of March, with their current streak being 4-0-0 over the last week. This is good news for Stars fans who were expecting a tank just around a month ago.
Here are the current playoff standings as of Thursday, March 26th:
1. Minnesota Wild 74 GP 91 PTS
2. Winnipeg Jets 74 GP 88 PTS
3. Los Angeles Kings 73 GP 86 PTS
4. Dallas Stars 74 GP 82 PTS
5. San Jose Sharks 73 GP 78 PTS
6. Colorado Avalanche 73 GP 78 PTS
The fact that the Stars are on a 4-0-0 tear leaves many unhappy fans out West. With the wins, the Stars are now four points ahead of the Colorado Avalanche and San Jose Sharks. So, even if the Stars don’t make the postseason, there’s a pretty good chance that the Avs and Sharks will be vacationing early as well. So for the time being, we can go ahead and count those two clubs out of the race and trim the hedge to four teams.
Also, a lot can still happen in the Pacific Division. Currently, the Flames hold a one point lead on the Kings for the third spot in the division, with the Kings maintaining a game in hand. The Stars may very well have bloodied the Flames’ nose in tonight’s game by giving the Kings the ability to hop them. But either way, the Stars will need one of the two teams to fall back and sink into obscurity to help them hop the gap and get to the playoff front porch.

But the Stars must also remain alert and on the prowl. Their chances were bumped up to 1.9%, up from 1.0% before the game began. At this point, eight more wins to end the season may not even be enough, but these Dallas Stars are one of a kind… and we’re going to enjoy every game we get out of ’em. The Avs fell to .1% and the Sharks sit at .8%, but anything can still happen.
“We’re just trying to control what we control and win hockey games. As of late, we’re doing a pretty good job. There have been some pretty solid team efforts. You never know how many points it is going to take to get in. We’ve been seeing that not too many teams are losing these days. Realistically, we can’t lose any game. We need to be strong all the way down the stretch.” -Jamie Benn
The Edmonton Oilers stand in the way of the Dallas Stars next. They ended Wednesday night by sending a swift kick to the groin of the Avalanche’s playoff hopes. They will be looking to do the same thing to Dallas on Friday night, so the Stars will need to remain alert. The Oilers came close to reefing the Stars back in December, but the Stars rallied and finished them in the shootout. They are 2/2 against Oil Country this season, so the last thing they need is to take a critical loss.
This win felt good, but there is still a lot of ground to cover. The Stars will need to look for help from the Montreal Canadiens tonight as they face off against the Winnipeg Jets. There are rumors that the Canadiens will be starting backup Dustin Tokarski in net, so getting a win against the “nothing-to-lose” Jets might prove to be a little difficult. We’ll see… But one thing is for sure. These Dallas Stars are here for the long haul to game 82.
