With the twelfth overall pick in the first round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, the Dallas Stars are proud to select…
Why Jeremy Roy?
Jeremy Roy is a 6’0, 183 lb. defenseman that knows his stuff. The 18-year-old played this past year as a member of the Sherbrooke Phoenix in the QMJHL, where he truly thrived.
It was his second season with the team, and in it he proved he was ready for the draft. Through his 46 game regular season, Roy produced five goals and 43 total points. This made him an almost point per game player. He carried his success into the postseason, where in six games he scored one goal and five points.
Roy may be small, but his characteristics make him the perfect addition to a Stars blue line that needs work.
The Dallas Stars possessed one of the worst defenses in the NHL last season, and require an offseason of substantial improvement if they want to gain a playoff spot come next year. Roy’s defensive compatibility could help them with their need.
“Elite skating defender who is compact-sized but whose offensive prowess and skating burst is giant-sized. An aggressive attacker who also uses his acceleration, powerful leg drive, and stick to get back in position after the puck goes back in transition. He plays fairly physical and handles attackers and the front and has decent gap control and stays with attackers. Very solid puck handler who is strong on his carries but also precision-like in his outlets and set-ups.” -Bill Placzek (Draftsite.com)
Roy is a gifted two way defender, but is primarily gifted in staying at home on the blue line and being ready for anything the opposition might suddenly throw at him.
Here is a scouting report on Jeremy Roy from Eliteprospects.com
The Stars current blue line is made up of mainly offensive-minded defenders. Trevor Daley and John Klingberg settled themselves among the top of the Stars list in regards to points. Roy could help out and shift his attention to a bit more defensive-minded. He runs the power play almost like a veteran would, and he is keen to applying pressure from the blue line. His dedication to keeping offenses outside the slot and pinning the puck to the boards quickly for a clear is an exceptional quality for a young defenseman, and something the Stars could use.
Though Roy may not be NHL-caliber just yet, he is very close and will more than likely see some AHL time in the upcoming season. Welcome to the Dallas Stars, Jeremy Roy!
