The Dallas Stars have an eventful 2015 offseason ahead of them, whether they like it or not. The questions that lie ahead are a few big ones. Do the Stars keep their current goaltending setup? Do they dump one or both goalies and reconstruct the crease? Is a big-name defenseman necessary to bring in? Or are the Stars fine with their current lineup?
There are also questions among the current lineup of the Stars and which players might be trade bait, should a trade happen.
Colton Sceviour may very well be a part of the bait.
Sceviour was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the fourth round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. He was placed in the WHL for the first two seasons that followed him being drafted, until he was finally brought up to the AHL to play with the Texas Stars.
Colton Sceviour played his first game for the Dallas Stars club on February 5, 2011. He ended up only playing one game in the 2010-2011 season. That ended his time in Dallas until the 2012-2013 lockout season, where he found himself suit up for one more game. He recorded his first NHL point in this game on an assist.
In 2013-2014, Sceviour began to see more time in the NHL, participating in 26 NHL games as a right winger when the Stars needed one. Through 26 games, Sceviour had quite the roll. He scored four goals and tallied 12 points in an average of 14:53 on the ice. These numbers afforded him a chance to play in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, where he scored one goal and tallied three points in six games.
The hot start Colton Sceviour experienced gave him a new look in the organization’s eyes, and Sceviour was called up for a full-time spot.
As 2014-2015 rolled along, that “full-time spot” eventually turned into a healthy scratch/starter role. Sceviour still logged 71 of 82 games this season, and ended up scoring 9 goals and totaling 26 points. He did this in 2:10 less of average ice time. This is interesting, considering his increase in total games, yet decrease in average ice time.
Colton Sceviour found excellent chemistry down the stretch with Vernon Fiddler and Ryan Garbutt. Through the “miracle” run in March, these three helped round out the Stars offense on the fourth line.

So now Sceviour is entering into the offseason with one year left on his contract at the age of 26. The great thing about Colton Sceviour is that whichever way the Stars decide to go, it will work out for both sides.
If the Stars were to deal Sceviour, it would be as part of a big deal for a team on rebuild, such as Alex Chiasson last season for Jason Spezza. Sceviour would be more than likely gain more ice time and show his offensive prowess. If the Stars kept him, he could continue to be the right-shot winger they need to help out on the bottom wings.
In my opinion, the Stars would be smart to keep Sceviour. His scenario for trade is favorable, though. The only way the Stars need to trade him is if they find a hot deal that needs a sweetener or if someone offers a good bundle for him. But it’s all up in the air.
The Dallas Stars have plenty of options in the upcoming offseason. Colton Sceviour is one of them. But for now, I say they keep him as a Star.
