Dallas Stars Draft: Goaltender Options

Dallas Stars fans have heard it over and over again, and I’ll say it once more.

The defense is horrendous.

That’s not news to any Stars fan, or anyone who has watched them play over the past few seasons, for that matter. Now, it’s unfair to blame the defenseman or the goalies solely, as they both are at fault.

GM Jim Nill is continuing to make moves in attempt to find a consistent group of defenseman that can produce. It’s time for a goalie.

This year’s 2015 NHL Entry Draft might be the perfect time.

In just four days, the Draft will take place at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida. The Dallas Stars have the 12th overall pick, but it is doubtful they select a goaltender here. To see my article over who I think the Stars will select, click here.

The next pick the Dallas Stars have is the 49th overall pick (second round). Because the Stars do not have a third round pick, there is a chance that they choose a netminder here. However, it is still improbable that the Victory Green choose a goalie here.

The fourth round (103rd overall) or fifth round (133rd overall) are where a selection of a goalie seems inevitable. Let’s look at what prospects the Dallas Stars might be eyeing in these rounds.

Fourth Round:

Ales Stezka

Ales Stezka, from the Czech Republic, split time this past season between the Czech U18 and U20 leagues. In the U18 league, Stezka had a 1.42 GAA along with a .948 save percentage. When moved up to the U20 league, he had a GAA of 2.77, and a .907 Save percentage in 40 games. But in the playoffs for the U20 league, Stezka was a brick wall, with a 1.98 GAA. At 6’3, 179, the 18-year-old is ranked as the fourth best European Goalie prospect in this year’s draft.

Matej Tomek

NHL Central Scouting have Tomek as the fifth best North American goaltender, and his stats prove worthy of so. With the Topeka Roadrunners of the NAHL, Tomek had a 1.83 GAA in 33 games. Tomek is widely considered to be first-round quality, but some scouts fear the quality of shooters he faced in the NAHL. Nevertheless, he has proved his case on why he can help out any NHL team in the future.

Fifth Round:

Connor Ingram

Connor Ingram gained attention in the 2013-2014 season with the Prince Albert Mintos of the SMHL, with a 1.98 GAA and a .928 save percentage. Ingram’s incredible play lead to multiple awards, including the league’s best goaltender, a league championship and the leader in both GAA and save percentage.

Rylan Parenteau

For the Weyburn Red Wings in the 2013-2014 season, Parenteau single-handedly anchored his team to a near return to the SJHL playoffs. In 41 games, Parenteau recorded a 2.72 GAA, but with a .926 save percentage. Scouts have been eyeing Parenteau since he was 14 years of age, and has been highly raved on ever since.

To conclude the draft, the Stars have the 163rd pick (sixth round) and the 193rd pick (seventh round). With a fairly hefty selection at goalie this Draft, the Stars could also go with a goaltender here, but I don’t see Nill waiting that long.

The Dallas Stars are not where they want to be, and have plenty of steps to take before they can get there.

In four days, the 2015 NHL Draft is another one of the many.
