Jamie Benn Could Be Cover Athlete For EA Sports NHL 16

Jamie Benn is currently enjoying recovery from double hip surgery in Las Vegas, Nevada with his mom, dad, brother, and sister by his side. They are all there as a part of Jamie’s invitation to the NHL Awards, which will take place later tonight.

Jamie Benn will accept the Art Ross Trophy tonight for scoring the most points in the NHL during the 2014-2015 season. Benn clenched the trophy with 8.5 seconds left in the final game of the season on Fan Appreciation Night when he tallied a secondary assist.

Benn is also a candidate for the Ted Lindsay Award. While competing with Alex Ovechkin and Carey Price, the three are striving to be the “most outstanding player in the regular season as judged by the members of the NHLPA.

But there is another potential award Jamie Benn may walk out with. This is not so much of an official award, but may very well be considered for some experienced gamers.

Yesterday, the EA Sports NHL Twitter account tweeted that one of the hockey players that made an appearance in their NHL 16 trailer. If you haven’t already seen it, here is the full, official trailer:

If you pause around 59 seconds, you will see a valiant and majestic Jamie Benn striding up the ice and dropping the puck off for counterpart Tyler Seguin.

So, with this in play, does this mean that EA Sports is going to give their NHL 16 cover a victory green makeover? Let’s take a look at this.

Here is a quick list of the all the NHL athletes in the video that basically have a realistic chance at making the cover. In other words, the players that are known outside of their respective team’s fan base.

  • Dion Phaneuf
  • Bobby Ryan
  • John Tavares
  • Pekka Rinne
  • Patrick Kane
  • Tyler Johnson
  • Jamie Benn
  • Corey Perry
  • Alex Ovechkin
  • Claude Giroux
  • Vladimir Tarasenko
  • Carey Price

So now that we have an exhaustive list, you may be thinking, “There is no possible way Benn finds his way out of this list as the top contender. But, we haven’t knocked out the preliminaries yet.

First off, if NHL is going to be fair and just about this, they will not award the cover to a player more than one time. That being said, Dion Phaneuf, Patrick Kane, Alex Ovechkin, and Claude Giroux have already graced an NHL cover before. So we can scratch their names off the list, right?

Bobby Ryan has not done anything too noteworthy over the past few seasons. Pekka Rinne finally had a decent season this year, but injuries plagued his success in years past. Tyler Johnson has only been in the league three years, which makes him a little young to be doing promotional stuff, as is Vladimir Tarasenko.

If you ask me, the cover is going to come down to Jamie Benn, Corey Perry, John Tavares, and Carey Price.  All four have a respectable reason to be in the running. But, to be fair, Jamie Benn won the Art Ross with busted hips… Soooooo….

If I had to take it down to two, I would have to cut it to Benn and Price. Both will be in attendance tomorrow and more than likely walk away with at least one award. Many are believing Tavares takes it, and he may. But honestly, which one had 87 points to end the year and which one had 86? Right.

It’ll be fun to see who wins. But if the NHL has anything to do with the decision, it’s probably not going to be Benn because, “Dallas isn’t a hockey town so they don’t deserve a cover.”

But we’ll just have to wait and see until tonight. Until then, keep your hopes high and get ready for a fun night.
