Dallas Stars Re-sign Forwards Curtis McKenzie, Patrick Eaves
The Dallas Stars were certainly on the move today. Though Jim Nill made it clear that the Stars would not be diving into any foreign UFA pools, he put a priority on re-signing UFA Patrick Eaves and RFA Curtis McKenzie.
These two forwards were prime pieces of the Dallas Stars offense down the stretch, especially in March. They will both remain as great additions to a high-octane Stars offense that is striving to be the most powerful one in the NHL come next season.
Here is the press release from DallasStars.com regarding Curtis McKenzie and Patrick Eaves:
Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill announced today that the club has signed left wing Curtis McKenzie to a two-year contract. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
McKenzie, 24, made his National Hockey League debut in 2014-15, scoring four goals and posting five points (4-1=5) with 48 penalty minutes in 36 games with Dallas. The forward also registered 21 points (6-15=21) and 46 penalty minutes in 31 AHL regular-season games with the Texas Stars. He also appeared in three games in the Calder Cup Playoff, registering two points (1-1=2).
In parts of three AHL seasons, he has earned 87 points (33-54=87) with 152 penalty minutes in 111 career regular-season contests. He has also recorded 16 points (4-12=16) in 26 Calder Cup Playoffs tilts and was a member of the Calder Cup winning Texas Stars in 2014. In 2013-14, he won the Dudley Garrett Memorial Award as the AHL’s most outstanding rookie, his first full professional campaign.
“Curtis is a very mature young player who is hard-nosed and accountable,” Nill said. “We look for him to continue growing all facets of his game and develop into an everyday NHL player.”
The 6-foot-2, 205-pound native of Golden, British Columbia was originally selected by Dallas in the sixth round (159th overall) of the 2009 NHL Draft.
Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill announced today that the club has signed forward Patrick Eaves to a one-year contract. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Eaves, 31, registered 27 points (14-13=27) in 47 games in his first season with Dallas in 2014-15. He led all Stars skaters last season with a plus/minus rating of +12, while he shared third on the team with a career-high six power play goals. Eaves’ goal, assist and point totals from the 2014-15 campaign are the most he has recorded since the 2006-07 season when he notched a career-high 32 points (14-18=32) while with Ottawa.
The 10-year NHL veteran has tallied 173 career points (88-85=173) in 491 regular-season NHL contests with Ottawa, Carolina, Detroit, Nashville and Dallas. Eaves has recorded 13 postseason points (6-7=13) in 67 career Stanley Cup Playoffs games including a trip to the Eastern Conference Final with Carolina in 2009.
“Patrick was a valuable part of our team last season,” said Nill. “We’re happy to have him back in the fold as he plays a number of different roles throughout the year and is a tremendous teammate.”
The 6-foot-0, 200-pound native of Ottawa, Ontario was originally selected by Ottawa in the first round (29th overall) of the 2003 NHL Draft and was signed by Dallas as a free agent on July 1, 2014.
It’s a great day to be a Stars fan at this point, and the future looks bright with these two added on. Now the only free agent that has yet to re-sign is RFA defenseman Jamie Oleksiak. Now let’s see what they do on the defensive front.
