Dallas Stars Goalies: Top Five In Franchise History

6 of 6

Ed Belfour:

Although almost every Dallas Stars fan will say Ed Belfour is the greatest goalie in franchise history, I don’t think it’s as obvious as fans make it out to be. I think Turco is just a little bit behind Belfour, and his stats are almost as good.

But even though I believe Turco deserves a little more credit, Ed Belfour is the best Dallas Stars goalie of all time.

When recalling Ed Belfour’s career in Dallas, the better question to ask is, what didn’t he do?

In just five seasons with the Stars, he changed the franchise forever.

What stood Belfour out was the fact that he played exceptionally well in both the regular season, as well as the postseason.

In his five regular season years with Dallas, Belfour posted a .910 save percentage, a 2.19 GAA, 27 shutouts, 160 wins and 17,891 minutes.

Wow.

Four times during Belfour’s five years, the Stars qualified for the playoffs. In those four playoff years, Belfour finished with 44 wins in 73 games.

Three out of those four playoff years, Belfour finished with a GAA of 1.87 or less.

Last, and most of all, Ed Belfour anchored the Dallas Stars to the Stanley Cup in the 1998-1999 season, and by letting up just nine goals in six games (including 4 overtime periods), he helped the Stars defeat the Buffalo Sabres in six games, and lift Lord Stanley for the first time in franchise history.

What Belfour achieved between the pipes will never be forgotten, and his legacy will forever be cherished by Dallas Stars fans.

If this current Dallas Stars team wants to win a Stanley Cup any time soon, then whatever goalie(s) is/are in net will have to step up. Dallas spends more money on goalies than any team in the entire league, and hopefully for Stars fans, it works out as planned.

There isn’t any hockey team that goes far in the NHL Playoffs without a good goalie. If the Stars want to win their first Stanley Cup since 1999, then the goaltending play is going to have to be magnificent.
