Dallas Stars Scenario To Punch Ticket To Traverse City Final

The Dallas Stars started out their journey through the Traverse City in dramatic fashion on Friday night. Dramatic may be an understatement when you look at what the Stars prospects did to seal their first win of the tournament against the Chicago Blackhawks prospects.

The Stars rallied late against the Hawks, about as late as they could get. Being down 2-1 late in the third period, newly acquired prospect and contender for a starting spot on the Dallas Stars defense Stephen Johns took matters into his own hands. Johns scored with 42 seconds left, officially tying it at 2-2. But the Stars oddly enough weren’t finished in regulation. Just 16 seconds later, 2013 draft pick Cole Ully snagged the game winning goal, giving the Stars the 3-2 lead. Not to mention Jason Dickinson scoring into the empty net just seconds later to bump the score to a 4-2 advantage.

Saturday was not as charitable to the Stars. They were scheduled as the first game of the day and faced off against the Carolina Hurricanes. It was an offensive shootout for the two teams, with quick goals coming from both sides. Brett Pollock led the Stars in scoring with two goals, while Cole Ully and Branden Troock each had one. The Stars led 4-2 at one point in the second period, with the offense seemingly in full force.

But the Hurricanes would fight back through the remainder of the game, and would tie it up early in the third period at four. The game would find its way into overtime, and the Hurricanes would end up winning it 5-4. It’s disappointing that the Stars ended up only snagging a point in the game, because now they fall into a must-win situation if they want to make it to the championship game on Tuesday.

There are no games scheduled for today, so the Dallas Stars next game is the final game of the round robin. It is scheduled for Monday at 7:00 p.m. against the Detroit Red Wings prospect system. The Stars must come away with the regulation victory if they want to take first place in the Gordie Howe division. Right now, here are the standings:

1. Detroit Red Wings 2-0-0, 6 pts.

2. Dallas Stars 1-0-1, 4 pts.

3. Carolina Hurricanes 1-1-0, 2 pts.

4. Chicago Blackhawks 0-2-0, 0 pts.

The tournament awards three points to a team for a regulation win, two points for an overtime or shootout win, one point for an overtime or shootout loss, and no points for a regulation loss.

The Stars are facing the undefeated hosts of the tournament, and a regulation win is necessary. The Stars team is filled with multiple different players who are looking for a great performance that could enhance their chances of making it to the Dallas Stars roster, or at least securely onto the doorstep. Some of these names include D Stephen Johns, D Esa Lindell, D Julius Honka, C Radek Faksa, C Devin Shore, and LW Jason Dickinson.

If the Stars win in regulation, that will put them at seven total points. If they win in overtime and give the Wings a point, the Wings would finish with seven points while the Stars would sit at six. A win in regulation would push them to the finals, where they would face off against the Columbus Blue Jackets for the second year in a row. These were the two teams in the championship last year, with the Jackets narrowly fending off the Stars in overtime to win the tourney.

We’ll see where it goes, but the Dallas Stars could use a win as a morale boost for their prospect group going forward.
