Dallas Stars Injuries: Jamie Benn, Ales Hemsky Injury Updates
The Dallas Stars are in the process of packing up their equipment bags and getting ready for their five-day adventure in Cedar Park, TX for their 2015 training camp.
The Stars have plenty of news to follow as the preseason inches closer, as they always seem to have. So let’s get caught up really quick on all that is going on in the Stars universe:
Traverse City Tourney Do Or Die:
The Dallas Stars prospect team traveled to Traverse City, Michigan this past week in order to participate in the annual Traverse City Prospect Tournament against seven other farm systems from the NHL.
The Stars, led mainly by D Stephen Johns, D Julius Honka, and F Cole Ully, started off in miraculous fashion on Friday night in their round robin opener against the Chicago Blackhawks. After being down 2-1 with less than a minute remaining in the third period, it looked as though the Stars prospect team wasn’t as special as most expected it to be.

But by the time the clock expired, the Stars found themselves holding a 4-2 lead. Johns, Ully, and Dickinson had found a way to score all within 40 seconds of each other, and the Stars started the tourney off with an impressive win.
On Saturday, the Stars faced off with the Carolina Hurricanes prospect team. The game ended up going into overtime, with both teams holding onto four goals in a highly-explosive offensive matchup. The Stars would not be able to hold in the early-going of the extra period, falling 5-4 to the Hurricanes.
The Dallas Stars prospect team is not down yet, though. They have one final game in their divisional round robin tonight against the Detroit Red Wings, who just happen to be hosting the tournament. The Stars currently sit in second place in the division with four points, while Detroit is in first with six. The tournament is different from the NHL in that it awards three points to the winning team, while an overtime loss gets one point. So the Stars are 1-0-1 and the Red Wings are 2-0-0.
If the Stars can knock the Red Wings off in regulation tonight, they will advance to the Traverse City championship game on Tuesday where they will play the Columbus Blue Jackets for a second year in a row. The Stars and Jackets prospect systems faced off in the final last year, with Columbus taking the title in overtime. Let’s hope they have enough magic to get them through their next trial tonight.
Benn, Hemsky almost back to normal:
The Dallas Stars saw more hospital bills than usual in their mailbox this past offseason. That was primarily because of hip surgeries for three of their biggest players: Jamie Benn, Ales Hemsky, and Trevor Daley.
Daley was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in the middle of recovery, but Benn and Hemsky are still working their way back. Here is a quote from GM Jim Nill today on their statuses from @StarsInsideEdge:
“We’re going to monitor them. They’re on their schedule; they are feeling very well, and they are starting to do full practices. They will practice down there (in Cedar Park), and we’ll play it by ear as far as scrimmages and exhibition games. Very doubtful they’ll play the first four or five exhibition games. We are hoping to get them in the last couple games, which is the best-case scenario. We are going to play it by ear. We’ve gone this far, it’s a long year, and we are going to make sure they are 100 percent before they play.”
With these two regular top-six forwards on the bench for the majority of the preseason, it opens the door for other potential NHL-caliber players to receive more playing time and potentially use it to earn themselves a spot.
But Nill is taking the safe route with these two, which is most definitely the best route to take. The last thing you want to do is rush either and accumulate more damage before the regular season begins. But as far as we know of at this point, both will be ready for the season opener. But anything can happen. This is when you just hope for the best and cannot do much more.
The Stars are 24 days away from starting their 2015-2016 regular season campaign. It’s time to dig in and get ready.
