Dallas Stars Seeing Reliable Production From Colton Sceviour
The Dallas Stars have a lot of decisions to make come Summer 2016 in regards to their impending free agents. One of those players is Colton Sceviour. Although he is having a decent year, is it enough to warrant a new contract?
The 2016 offseason will be a very interesting one for the Dallas Stars. While they hopefully will not have to worry about the offseason beginning until mid-June or so, it’s still a good idea to take a look at all the pieces currently moving.
The Stars currently own seven players who are impending unrestricted free agents on their NHL roster. They also have two impending restricted free agents on the roster. This team is streaking through the NHL with a record of 27-8-3, which is good enough for first place in the league in terms of points. But even with the supposed “power” team, the Stars will more than likely not have the exact same roster come next season.
A lot of the players in the final year of their deals are similar to others in many ways. For example, Jason Demers and Alex Goligoski are having very similar years and are in comparable scenarios in their careers. Both will be UFA’s this season and there is a good chance that the Stars will have to decide between the two.
But one of the many interesting cases in UFA news this coming offseason is the status of Colton Sceviour.
Sceviour is a 26-year old Canadian and was selected by the Dallas Stars in the fourth round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. He is a Dallas-grown player and is in the midst of his third season in the NHL where he played more than 20 games. In his first year, he posted 12 points (8-4-12) in 26 games. In the second year, he tallied 26 points (9-17-26) in 71 games. This season, he has nine points (4-5-9) in 35 games played.
Colton Sceviour has been flexed throughout the lineup since being called up from the Texas Stars in 2013. Though he mainly fills in on the wings of the fourth line, Sceviour has seen time on the third line and even been granted the chance to play with Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin on the top line.
Sceviour is currently on the third line with Antoine Roussel and Cody Eakin, and the three are lighting an intriguing fire together. Since being initially matched up on December 21st in Minnesota, the trio has combined for six goals and ten points.
While head coach Lindy Ruff will more than likely continue shifting the lines as the year progresses, it is good to see that Sceviour is putting in work no matter who he is with or where he is located in the lineup.
His plus/minus on-ice rating of +9 this year is the highest of his career. He is also a part of the penalty kill unit. Sceviour earned his spot on the PK team and is a valued member. Whenever the Stars are down a man, he can be counted on to dig in, find the puck, and get it out.
Sceviour is in the last year of his deal with the Dallas Stars, which has a cap hit of $650,000. That is a small price to pay for the services and effort that Sceviour is giving off. He signed this 2-year deal in the middle of his 2013-2014 campaign with the Stars, and will more than likely be hoping for a renewal.

Considering the Stars do not have the perks of negotiating with Sceviour as an RFA, there may be some difficulty. For the first part, the Stars may not offer Sceviour a new deal at all. He is a third/fourth line winger that can be replaced by someone younger in the system.
By another token, it would be smart to re-sign him because he plays more than one role and can be shifted through the lineup and still produce. But the Stars may not offer him enough money, security, or a long enough term.
There are a lot of moving pieces, and more will continue to shift as the Dallas Stars inch closer to the free agency market and contract disputes galore. They may end up signing Sceviour before the season ends. Or, they may never offer him a deal and let him go.
