Did you know that there’s a level that is lower than rock bottom? The Dallas Stars found it on Tuesday night, only contributing further to the fact that they are ready for this nightmare season to end already.
Whether you’ve been a Dallas Stars fan since the team came to Big D in 1993 or just picked them up one or two years back, everyone can agree on one thing: this season sucks.
Last night was the first time in it seems like forever that I got up and left my TV mid-game. The Stars, with extremely small hopes of making the postseason, were picked apart and humiliated by the Edmonton Oilers. A 7-1 final score was a pretty clear indication of how this season has gone for Dallas: down the pipes.
In the postgame interview session, Tyler Seguin talked about how he had thought the loss to the San Jose Sharks was rock bottom, but that the loss to Edmonton was a whole new monster. Head coach Lindy Ruff talked about how he thought it was the worst game he had ever coached as a Dallas Star.
There was no energy, no motivation, and no hope. All in all, it was a pathetic and heart-wrenching loss. How long has it been since watching the Dallas Stars play caused you to physically and emotionally ache? It’s probably been a while, but last night and this season has proven that it is possible.
Dallas Stars
This season has turned out to be truly unlike any other in recent memory when it comes to poor performance.
27-32-10 with 64 points and 13 games remaining. That means that even if the Stars run the table and go on a 13-game win streak, they will finish the season with 90 points, their lowest total since 2011-12. And a performance like that will likely still not be enough to get them into the postseason.
If the Stars play .500 hockey the rest of the way out (which they have had trouble doing recently), they would finish the season with 77 points. That would total out to their second lowest total ever since moving to Dallas, beating out the 1995-96 season by 11 points.
And this season will have no thrilling finish to it. In 2014-15 when the Stars fought until the very end to make the postseason, Jamie Benn finished the season on a high note by claiming the Art Ross Trophy in the dying seconds of game 82.
This year will easily go down as the worst in the Jim Nill era and will only bring a world of questions and worry with it once it reaches its end. And that’s exactly what the Dallas Stars need right now: the end. They need to get this season buried deep into the past and take a grab at a fresh start.
What do Stars fans have to look forward to as this year closes out? Not much, if anything at all. Just an offseason of big changes and little time to do them. Everything will have to be precise. The Stars have a lot of digging to do in order to get out of the rock bottom basement, and it’s obviously not going to get done this season. That’s what the offseason is for.

The Dallas Stars pulled a 180 this season, and it still may be unbelievable to accept just how far they have fallen from last year’s glory. But once they close up this season, it’s all up to Nill and Co. to make it all better.
Until then, dig deep in your Dallas Stars’ roots and send them the support they need. This has been a tough season for fans, but it’s surprisingly been even tougher on the players. They’re just as lost as you are. That’s why they are waiting for the offseason as well. And it’s almost here.
