NHL hockey has been established and present in Texas for 25 years now, but there is still room for growth. Jason Spezza and the Dallas Stars are helping keep that growth on track.

This season, the Dallas Stars will celebrate their 25th year in the state of Texas. It’s been a long haul, but the results are plentiful.

Since the introduction of NHL hockey in Big D, the game of hockey has slowly grown and spread across the state. As the game continues to be found by different Dallas sports fans, the playing of the game has also grown, specifically in North Texas.

But, as you already know, there is always plenty of room for improvement. And sometimes (most of the time) it can be difficult to grow the game in a non-traditional market. Thankfully, the Dallas Stars have been chipping away at the barrier and helping spawn the game all across the state.

25 years has helped out in a large way, but it’s not just the time; it’s the efforts by individual players.

Over the years, the Stars have had a good number of players make an impact on the hockey community in Dallas. Whether it’s sled hockey fundraisers, sponsoring special groups, or leading Little Rookies camps, players are always looking to make an impact.

Jason Spezza was the most recent Star to make a splash in the hockey community, and he did it in a big way. In an effort to help grow the number of child hockey athletes in the area, Spezza hosted a children’s hockey camp at the StarCenter in Frisco.

The clinic was for the children that received funds from his scholarship program last year. Started in December of the 2015-16 season, Spezza has donated $25,000 in each of the two seasons since its origin. In addition, Texas Land and Cattle donates $300 for every point that Spezza tallies in each season.

The Jason Spezza Scholarship Fund has raised over $100,000 for the advancement of local youth hockey in North Texas.

The scholarship is aimed primarily at helping young hockey players play the game they adore. Whether they struggle financially to participate or just from hidden obstacles, Spezza’s scholarship allows for them to take the ice and enjoy the beautiful game.

The camp was held this past Saturday and was a big hit. The Dallas Stars created a small video about the clinic. You can watch it below.

It truly tears at the heartstrings, doesn’t it?

This video is just a small testament to Jason Spezza’s commitment to North Texas hockey. And it’s not just Spezza; it’s a mass of Stars players putting in time and effort to grow the game. There is dedication and commitment from plenty of players, and that’s a strong step in the right direction.
