There’s nothing quite like seeing the newest, brightest NHL players of the future take the stage at each entry draft. This year, though, it will be special because the Dallas Stars are hosting the festivities at the American Airlines Center.

In today’s NHL it’s nearly impossible to have success without drafting the right players. Imagine where the St. Louis Blues would be without Vladimir Tarasenko or how the Pittsburgh Penguins’ fate would have been different had they not won the Sidney Crosby lottery years ago.

This year, the NHL greats of the future will start their careers in Big D. And it. will. be. great.

Playoff Drought in Rearview

While it’s never easy to miss the playoffs, especially if you’re the Dallas Stars and are making it a rather frequent occurrence, having something to look forward to is key. Having that not wait until puck drop in the fall is that much better.

More from Draft

Hosting the draft this summer will reignite Dallas’ excitement about this team, while also showing them just what the NHL’s future is all about. Missing the playoffs will sound like something from the distant past when the focus shifts to the newest players trading in their old jerseys for Victory Green.

Perfect Opportunity for Big Announcement(s)

It’s no secret the Stars have a few big announcements in the works. They have one big ticket question marks in need of answers by the time the draft rolls around: who the head coach will be (officially). If they follow the trend at the moment and hire Jim Montgomery, draft weekend would be a great opportunity for Montgomery to speak to Stars fans and even meet some of them.

The attention of the league and its fans will be on the stage in Dallas, so being able to share the new coach like that would be a great crowd booster on an already exciting day.

Of course, it’s not guaranteed that the Stars will make any big moves on the day of the draft. However, it’s not unheard of for the home team to do a little extra to keep the spotlight in their direction. A trade could definitely serve as another big splash tactic.

Bottom Line

Regardless of what extracurricular announcements are made at the draft this year, it will no doubt be a special event for the entire city. Hopefully they’ll find the next diamond in the rough and build upon their already strong future.
