It’s been nearly a month since free agency kicked off in the NHL. While the Dallas Stars have had a few things go their way, we’re all still waiting on a potential big trade announcement and the re-signing of Tyler Seguin. Both, however, have been pretty silent of late, which is right for Dallas’ future.

The Dallas Stars want to re-sign Tyler Seguin and they are looking at the possibility of bringing in a big name. Those are two facts that are nearly indisputable. However, figuring out how to logistically make them happen is the tricky part.

Although it’s been somewhat frustrating to see the Stars sit idly by as they await decisions from the big names left on the market and on the trade watch, it’s the right decision for their future.

Early Bird Catches the Worm

While it’s a common saying that being first is best, in some cases it’s entirely off base. There are always a few (if not more) free agency signings and offseason trades that prove to be big mistakes down the line. It’s impossible to tell and hindsight is 20-20, but the Dallas Stars are trying their best to not fall in that category this year, especially after having done so at times in the past few seasons.

More from Free Agency

If that means holding off on announcing a trade or even holding off on a new deal altogether, so be it. Dallas wants to be competitive for years to come, not just for one season. That means there needs to be dedication throughout the organization — from players to coaches to the front office staff — to make things happen. And that takes more time than you’d think.

Right Time, Right Price

A good deal is only available for a short window of time, especially when it comes to sports. But, if the Stars are unwilling to waver in giving up certain pieces of their organization or draft picks in the future, even a good offer might not be good enough.

Jim Nill has a future in mind for this club. He knows what type of players he wants on the team and there’s a dedication to making that happen. Dallas has been far from great for a while now and it needs to change.

Taking the first big name deal that’s possible isn’t the way to achieve that, especially not if it means giving up key pieces to the future. Again, building with what comes next in mind is truly the only way to be successful in this league. Committing to that can only be good for the Stars.

Bottom Line

Nothing is great or exciting about the NHL offseason during the end of July and beginning of August.

Yes, there will likely be more announcements and trades before training camp starts, but it pales in comparison to what will be happening come October. So, until that magical time of year hits, we’re all left asking #isitOctoberYet?
