After a strong start to their preseason, the Dallas Stars dropped the last two games, including a 6-5 loss this evening to the Avalanche at home.

Luckily for the Dallas Stars, those last two games don’t mean anything, and everyone starts fresh in a few days.

Of course, that means the 9 points they would’ve earned from their 4-2-1 record don’t count for anything either, but the Stars showed some positive potential that will hopefully carry over into the regular season.

Both teams had their offense on display tonight, with 11 goals between them. Gabriel Landeskog and Mikko Rantanen had 3-point nights for the Avalanche while Radek Faksa and Tyler Seguin each had a goal and an assist for the Stars.

Penalties were a major part of the problem in the Stars’ last game today, with the Avalanche taking an early 2-0 lead on a pair of power play goals. One of the early penalties was a slashing penalty by Alexander Radulov, who had a big problem with minor penalties last year that he needs to get under control for this season.

Brett Ritchie got into a fight with Ian Cole in the second period, and earned an extra 10 minute misconduct for it. It was a bit unnecessary in a preseason match between two players who are established on their respective rosters, and Ritchie took it a bit too far after Cole went down, which is why he ended up with the extra penalty.

Colton Point played the whole game in net for the Stars after being recalled from the minors. With Khudobin and Bishop resting up before the season, Point got the chance with Landon Bow as his back-up.

It wasn’t a great night for Point, but he’s not expected to be NHL ready right now in the first place. Realistically, he’ll get a few more years in the minors to keep developing before making his way up, but the experience was good for him.

The Stars got the opportunity again to work on their 6-on-5 with the goalie pulled. This was their second chance this preseason, and they’ve scored on both opportunities, this time with an unassisted Seguin goal.

With preseason officially done, the Stars still have a few more decisions to make before the roster submission deadline as they get ready for opening night.
