The Dallas Stars have had two good wins so far this season, but there’s still talk of a lingering concern from last year: depth scoring.

When the Dallas Stars defeated the Jets on Saturday, they did it with all of their goals coming from their top line players, though on a mix of even strength and power play goals.

Two goals a piece from Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn plus a goal from Alexander Radulov is certainly a good night on the scoreboard, but it doesn’t necessarily bode well for the season as a whole.

However, the game against the Coyotes was a little better, with Devin Shore and John Klingberg each getting a goal.

Last season, the Stars had a major problem with depth scoring, and it was the focus of most of the offseason talk surrounding the team. Unfortunately, the Stars didn’t do that much to address the problem in the offseason, but there are quite a few players already in the line-up who could help this season.

The more important thing for now is for no one to panic, and that applies to both the team and the fans.

There’s an incredibly small sample size so far on the scoresheet, so things have plenty of time to change. The top line may have put on a clinic on Saturday, but their success doesn’t mean there’s going to be no depth scoring. It just means that Benn, Seguin, and Radulov play really well together, and that’s very good for the team.

This team is looking so much better already in their two games this season, and it would be bad if the coaching staff got worried about depth scoring too quickly and messed up what’s working. It may just take them a few games to really get started.

With players like Jason Spezza and Devin Shore already looking like they might be able to bounce back this year, there’s certainly promise outside of the top line. If some of the newcomers like Roope Hintz can help out too, the Stars will be in great shape long-term, especially now that Valeri Nichushkin is looking ready to come back. Nichushkin’s return will also hopefully help as Montgomery works towards getting the forward lines where he wants them with a healthy roster.

It’s also not like everyone has looked bad either. Other players have been getting some nice chances and looking good. For example, Radek Faksa has 4 shots on the season, while Blake Comeau, Jason Spezza, and Mattias Janmark all have 3 shots. The only forward without a shot so far is Brett Ritchie.

There’s been some good pressure by the bottom six, and it’s only a matter of time before some depth scoring starts happening. It’s just a matter of when and how much.

Until then, fans should give it a few more games before they start to worry too much.
