Dallas Stars Trade Devin Shore To Anaheim Ducks For Andrew Cogliano
The Dallas Stars and Anaheim Ducks executed one of the first big trades of the 2018-19 season on Monday morning. The Stars sent forward Devin Shore to the Ducks in exchange for veteran forward Andrew Cogliano.
Trade season kicked off for the Dallas Stars and Anaheim Ducks early on Monday morning.
Earlier today, the announcement was made that the Stars had traded forward Devin Shore to the Ducks in exchange for forward Andrew Cogliano.
It was assumed that the Stars would need to make a trade to bolster their scoring efforts sometime this year. But with the NHL Trade Deadline more than a month away, Dallas went ahead and crafted player-for-player trade with another team still in the playoff chase in the Western Conference.
Shore, 24, was originally drafted by the Dallas Stars in the second round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut in the 2015-16 season and has been a staple in the Stars’ lineup since the beginning of the 2016-17 season, playing in all but four of the team’s games.

This season, Shore has five goals and 17 points in 42 games played. He also owns a rating of zero after posting a franchise-worst -30 during the 2017-18 season. Shore skated primarily on the second line and fourth line for Jim Montgomery‘s offense and was a prime factor in the Dallas penalty kill through the first half of the 2018-19 season. He’s a homegrown piece of the Stars organization that turned himself into a full-time NHL asset.
Cogliano, 31, was initially drafted in the first round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft by the Edmonton Oilers. After playing in 328 consecutive games (four straight seasons) with the Oilers, he was traded to the Anaheim Ducks in July 2011.
Anaheim is where Cogliano has spent the past eight seasons of his NHL career, playing in all but two games (due to a suspension) over the span. That’s 584 of a possible 586 games, making him a so-called “iron man.”
This year, Cogliano has struggled with finishing on offense, with only three goals and 11 points under his belt through 46 starts. This performance follows up two consecutive 35-point seasons for the forward, which both saw him score double-digit goals. He’s averaged 14:50 of average ice time per game in his career and posted a +61 rating with the Ducks.
More From Blackout Dallas: Inconsistency Is Still Stars’ Most Consistent Factor
The 5-10, 177-pound forward brings speed and a veteran voice to the Dallas lineup. His speed makes him an effective winger in the transition game and in carrying pucks deep, while his durability makes him a reliable lineup piece. In addition, he’s also a weathered veteran, with 912 regular season games and 64 playoff games under his belt. Adding Cogliano will bring experience and potentially more tenacity to a relatively young Dallas offense.

“In acquiring Andrew, we are able to add a conscientious player who brings a veteran-presence to our room,” Dallas Stars GM Jim Nill said in the press release. “His explosive speed, 200-foot game and iron-man mentality will help our team both on and off the ice.”
At the end of the day, this is a trade made by two teams in the playoff chase that are both lacking something. For the Stars, it’s a forward that can play and produce in the top six as well as bring a strong veteran presence to the locker room. According to reports, the trade came together rather quickly on Sunday night and was finalized on Monday morning.
Trade season is now open and the Dallas Stars are already off and running.
There’s more to be said about this deal and we will have more analysis and information coming out later in the day. Stay tuned.
