The 2019 NHL All-Star Break provided a chance for 31 teams to reset and take a glimpse around the rest of the league. It also provided a chance for Vegas to update the Stanley Cup odds. And in the most recent results, the Dallas Stars are holding steady.

The Dallas Stars are an enigma when it comes to Stanley Cup odds.

Let’s rewind back to the 2016 preseason. After winning the Central division title and falling one game short of the Western Conference Finals in the 2015-16 season, the Stars returned the majority of their starting lineup for the 2016-17 year. As a result, they were given the fifth-best odds by Bovada to win the 2017 Stanley Cup Final at 13/1.

But by the midway mark of the season, that number had dropped significantly. Dallas ended up turning in one of their worst records in franchise history and fell 15 points short of qualifying for the postseason.

After the 2017 Stanley Cup was won by the Pittsburgh Penguins, the early 2018 Stanley Cup odds were released. And even after missing the playoffs, where did the Dallas Stars find themselves? With the eighth-best odds at 16/1. Their odds boosted slightly upon adding Alexander Radulov, Marc Methot, and Martin Hanzal during free agency and left the Stars in solid standing with the fourth-best odds.

And while they looked like a playoff contender for the majority of the 2017-18 season, a collapse in the month of March kept Dallas outside of the playoff picture yet again.

For the second season in a row, the Dallas Stars fell drastically short of the high hopes set for them by Bovada. That left the hope of the 2018-19 season hanging in the balance.

Shortly after missing the postseason cutoff, the Stars began their search for a new head coach. They ended up hiring University of Denver head coach Jim Montgomery and prepared to take the franchise in a new direction.

And after the Washington Capitals lifted the Stanley Cup in June 2018, Bovada released the early Stanley Cup odds. After another head coaching change, the Stars saw their odds drop to 25/1. It was the 12th-best mark of any NHL team.

Following the first day of 2018 free agency and a few minor additions, the Stars saw their odds drop to 28/1 and slipped to the 15th-best spot.

As the 2018-19 season got underway, the Dallas Stars struggled to find a groove and were instead confined to mediocrity. They floated around the Western Conference wild card race for the first half of the season and were in need of taking a next step.

It’s been ten days since the Stars played in their last game, which ended in a 4-2 win against the Winnipeg Jets. The game put the Stars’ potential on full display and solidified their spot in the playoff race as they entered a ten-day break.

That included the CBA-mandated break as well as the 2019 NHL All-Star Break, which included four straight days of no scheduled NHL games. And once the All-Star Weekend kicked off, Bovada took the opportunity to update the Stanley Cup odds for each of the 31 teams.

So, where did the Dallas Stars fall on the list? They ended up in a very similar spot as they have been for much of the 2018-19 season.

The most recent update has the Stars sitting at 35/1 odds to win the 2019 Stanley Cup odds. That gives them the 15th-best odds of any NHL team to win the championship.

Dallas owned the exact same odds back in November 2018 and were ranked in similar fashion. So, at least they’re consistent in betting odds.

While some teams like Edmonton, St. Louis, and Anaheim have plummeted since the beginning of the year and other teams like Calgary, Montreal, and the New York Islanders have skyrocketed, the Stars have held the line. You can spin that into a good or bad scenario depending on how you look at it, but the fact of the matter is that Dallas is still a middle-ground club in the NHL, a potential playoff team, and a bit of a long shot when it comes to contending for the Cup.

Now, there is still plenty of regular season left. The Stars just recently passed the midway point of their 2018-19 campaign and have 33 games left to either surge ahead or unwind entirely. How they play this final two months of action could not only shift their standing going into the playoffs, but could also greatly affect their overall odds.
