The Montreal Canadiens were able to snap their 6 game losing streak against the Dallas Stars tonight 5-3. This becomes the worst loss by the Stars this season since the Canadiens are one of the worst teams in the league right now. Here is what went wrong for the Dallas Stars tonight during the game.

Dallas Stars vs Montreal Canadiens: 1st period recap

The Stars came out with that killer instinct that they’ve been missing by getting a lot of possession time on Montreal’s side of the ice. Radek Faska had one of the best opportunities to score in the first half of the period, but it went off both the pipes and went out.

Jake Oettinger also did his job by keeping the puck out of the net. Montreal is trying to break that losing streak and it’s shown opening minutes of this game. Jacob Peterson almost gave the Stars a 1-0 lead with 8 minutes remaining in the first, but it went off the pipe as usual.

The Stars and Canadiens would go into the first intermission tied at 0. The Stars outshot the Canadiens 14-6 and led also in face off wins 10-7. Stars need to tighten up their defense in the 2nd period and keep attacking Montreal’s net.

Dallas Stars vs Montreal Canadiens: 2nd period recap

The Stars almost opened the 2nd period by scoring a goal, but it went off another pipe. Joel Hanley would head to the box for the first Stars penalty and Montreal would convert. Christian Dvorak would get the power play goal and the Stars would trail 1-0. The Stars have now allowed a power play goal in the last 10 out of 11 games.

Michael Pezzetta would score 20 seconds after the power play to make it 2-0 Canadiens after getting the rebound off Oettinger’s arm. The Stars would go back on the power play and they couldn’t get anything past Sam Montembeault. Jacob Peterson would get the Stars on the board with a baseball-style goal to make it 2-1 Canadiens.

Faksa would draw a tripping call to send the Stars on a power play that would continue into the third period. The Stars would get a goal in the 2nd but they would still trail the Canadiens 2-1 going into the second intermission. Stars would lead in shots on goal 28-13 after two in the books at the AAC.

Dallas Stars vs Montreal Canadiens: 3rd period recap

The Stars opened the period on the power play and it didn’t go the way that they wanted it to go. Michael Toffoli would score a short-handed goal to increase the lead to 3-1 Canadiens. Christian Dvorak would cause a breakaway and backhanded it past Oettinger to make it 4-1.

The Stars would answer the fourth goal by Montreal with a goal of their own. Tyler Seguin would deflect a puck past Montembeault to make it 4-2 Canadiens. The Canadiens answered back with a Josh Anderson goal to make it 5-2. Jake Oettinger would get pulled for the first time in his young NHL career after the goal.

Sparks flared midway through the 3rd period when the Stars and Canadiens decided to have an all-out brawl on the ice. Joe Pavelski would score on the power play late in the third to cut it to 5-3 Canadiens and that would go on to be the final score of the game. The Stars will play on Thursday on the road against the Buffalo Sabres.
