The Dallas Stars look like they were about to let the Oilers walk out with a win tonight in Dallas. Roope Hintz basically said, “that’s not happening” when he scored the game-tying goal in the 3rd which propelled the Stars to victory 5-3 over Edmonton. This was a huge win because Vegas lost to Winnipeg and since the Stars got two points, Dallas leap frogs them into the final wildcard spot in the Western Conference playoffs. Here is how the game went down in Dallas Tuesday night.
Dallas Stars vs Edmonton Oilers: 1st period recap
Both teams started out the game playing defense not allowing each other to get set up in each other’s zone. The Oilers almost caught Oettinger out of place and scored the first goal, but he recovered and stopped the shot. He would also stop a one-timer in close near the net.
Duncan Keith would trip John Klingberg and send the Stars on the first power play of the game. The Oilers would easily kill the penalty as the Stars mainly passed the puck around in their zone for a majority of the time. Kailer Yamamoto would get the Oilers on the board first with a redirection on a shot from the blue line. The Oilers are 21-0 when they score the first goal of the game.
The Stars would trail the Oilers after the 1st period. The Oilers would lead the Stars in shots on goal 9-7 and in face offs won 11-9. Stars played great in the first period, just got to make sure they don’t bunch up in front of Oettinger and block his view of the blue line.
Dallas Stars vs Edmonton Oilers: 2nd period recap
Sekera would send the Stars on the penalty kill shortly into the 2nd period. The Stars would kill the power play and return to even strength. Jason Robertson would tie the game at 1 shortly after the penalty kill.
Stars would go on the power play after Darnell Nurse interfered with Roope Hintz. Joe Pavelski converted on the power play 16 seconds in to take the 2-1 lead.
Jamie Benn almost connected on a one-timer to make it 3-1 but missed the net. The Stars have Sbeen buzzing on offense ever since Jason Robertson scored that second goal. Stars would go on their third power play after the Oilers get called for interference. Stars would actually get some good scoring chances on the power play but fail to convert on them.
Klingberg would go to the box for hooking Connor McDavid at the end of the second period. The Stars would go to the second intermission up 2-1 against the Oilers. Edmonton would still lead in shots on goal after the 2nd period 20-18 and in face offs 20-19.
Stars need to come out in the 3rd period and put this game out of reach, no need to use the dump and chase method they usually do in the 3rd period. Got to keep attacking the net if the Stars want to win this game here on home ice.
Dallas Stars vs Edmonton Oilers: 3rd period recap
The Stars would kill off the remainder of the Oiler’s power play to start the 3rd period. Stars would go on their 4th power play after Pavelski got slashed.
Evander Kane would score a short-handed goal during the Stars power play to tie it at 2. Louis Draisaitl would score quickly after to give the Oilers the lead 3-2.
Stars went back to the dump and chase method of preserving a lead and it’s not looking good for them in the 3rd period. It’s like they can stop playing when they have a one goal lead and they would still win.
Tyler Seguin would take a stupid penalty that the Stars didn’t need and would luckily kill off the Oiler’s power play that resulted from that. Roope Hintz would tie the game at 3 on a beautiful pass from Klingberg. Denis Gurianov would score 24 seconds later to give the Stars the lead.
Tyler Seguin would score the empty net dagger and the 300th goal of his career to seal the deal for the Stars 5-3. The Stars are back in the Western Conference playoffs in the second wildcard spot thanks to the amazing offensive surge late in the 3rd.
