Now that’s how you celebrate bringing in the new year. The Dallas Stars beat the San Jose Sharks 5-2 as they marked the end of 2022. The Stars are currently leading the Central Division and the entire Western Conference. The Stars also celebrated Fredrick Olofsson’s first NHL goal tonight. There are a lot of things to talk about in the New Year’s Eve game so let’s get to it. Here are the three things that really stood out tonight as the Stars were able to get the win over the Sharks.

Dallas Stars vs San Jose Sharks Recap: 3. Taking advantage of the power play

The Stars were able to take advantage of having an extra man on the ice tonight multiple times. The first two goals that the Stars scored tonight were on the power play. Joe Pavelski got the tip in front of the net on the first one. The second goal came on the next power play when Jason Robertson was able to get it past the Sharks goaltender. They even got a goal while on the penalty kill as Roope Hintz got one off a turnover. Good night on the special teams all around.

Dallas Stars vs San Jose Sharks Recap: 2. Jake Oettinger gets the surprise start

I think a lot of fans were scratching their heads when Jake was announced as the starting goaltender tonight for the Stars. He has basically played the last two weeks and was due for a break after the Minnesota game. I guess Pete DeBoer wanted to go with the hot goaltender tonight and it paid off for him. Oettinger usually does well when he strings a bunch of games together. I would expect him to have one of the west coast games off this coming week.

Dallas Stars vs San Jose Sharks Recap: 1. Fredrik Olofsson gets his first career goal

Sometimes the long wait does pay off for hockey players. Olofsson is classified as an NHL Rookie even at the age of 26. He has bounced around from league to league and team to team for most of his career. He finally got his first career NHL goal ever and it was even special cause it was on home ice. It was also even the game-winning goal tonight for the Stars You could see the excitement come out of him once he knew that puck crossed into the net.
