This game is going to sting for the Dallas Stars for some time especially young Jake Oettinger. K’Andre Miller scored the game-tying goal with 0.9 seconds left in regulation and Adam Fox finished it in OT. The Stars would go on to lose 2-1 to the New York Rangers tonight at Madison Square Garden. I don’t know what’s more embarrassing than the Stars not being able to get an empty net goal. The Stars need to practice their empty net goal situations after tonight. Here are the three takeaways from tonight’s game.
Dallas Stars vs New York Rangers Recap: 3. Got to score for Oettinger
The Stars organization and the team have to realize Jake Oettinger is not Luka Doncic and can’t carry this team by himself. He needs help from his teammates by scoring goals and giving him a nice cushion in case of a late-game surge by the opponent. Oettinger should be very mad after tonight’s last-second breakdown in the Stars zone. The Stars can’t ride Oettinger to victory after scoring only a goal.
Dallas Stars vs New York Rangers Recap: 2. League needs to make new rules
Oettinger is a very clean player that doesn’t take penalties. However, tonight he did take a penalty by taking his helmet off in the middle of play. Could the ref by Oettinger not see the two straps that were dangling off the side of his helmet? The league needs to create new rules league for goalie safety this offseason. If part of the helmet gets damaged or comes off during play, the refs need to blow the play dead so the goalie can fix their equipment.
Dallas Stars vs New York Rangers Recap: 1. Score empty net goals
The Stars desperately need to work on this during practice this week. The Rangers literally pulled their goalie and gave the Stars a chance to put the game away. The Stars failed to get the puck in the net and that’s how we ended up in OT. This should have been a 2-0 win over the Rangers and a shutout for Oettinger. Now the Stars return home for a quick stop to play the Calgary Flames on Saturday afternoon.
