The Dallas Stars have one of the biggest games of the season this afternoon at the American Airlines Center. The Stars take on the Colorado Avalanche as the Stars try to slow down the Avalanche from catching them. Even though the Colorado Avalanche is six points behind the Stars in the standings going into today’s game. The Stars have got to win today in order to slow them down from catching them. Here are the three keys of the game for the Stars against the Avalanche.

Dallas Stars vs Colorado Avalanche Preview: 3. Do not lose on Jamie Benn Day

The Stars are celebrating the illustrious career of their Captain Jamie Benn before today’s game. They are giving him his silver stick from when he played his 1000th career NHL game against the Anaheim Ducks in March. The Stars have a big issue of losing when they have celebrations before games. They need to win today’s game so that way they don’t make today’s celebration the secondary focus for reporters.

Dallas Stars vs Colorado Avalanche Preview: 2. Stop Mikko Rantanen

The Stars have got to slow down Mikko Rantanen today on the ice, there isn’t a bigger key to the game than that about the Avalanche. He has 41 goals and 31 assists going into the matchup with the Stars this afternoon. They have got to check him into the boards and make sure he doesn’t get an opportunity to get a shot off on Jake Oettinger. If the Stars can make sure that he doesn’t have a field day this afternoon at the American Airlines Center, I like the Star’s odds of winning the game.

Dallas Stars vs Colorado Avalanche Preview: 1. Give Oettinger a goal cushion

The Stars have got to do their part on offense today by making sure that they give Oettinger a goal cushion in case the Avalanche have a late goal surge in the third period. They just got to help him out as they did Matt Murray in their last matchup against the Chicago Blackhawks. Oettinger has a huge task today of defending the net against one of the hottest teams in the league right now. He will need all the help from his teammates today and giving him a goal cushion is one of them.
