The Dallas Stars’ bye week is upon us, and with it comes some extra down time. Here are some tips on how to stay sane while the Stars are on vacation!

As we’ve entered that ominous and bleak 5 day hockey-less stretch known as bye week, it may be time for some of us to consider how we are going to fill the hockey void in our lives.

There are several approaches to take, depending on your attitude and current emotional fragility when it comes to the Dallas Stars- all roads lead to Rome, but not all paths are created equal. So here are a couple of approaches and suggestions for your bye week entertainment to help you get by as successfully as possible.

Low-stress option

Avoid hockey altogether! What a simple solution! I know that if your calendar has been ruled by game dates and times for as long as you can remember, going cold turkey for five days sounds like a nightmare.

But, considering the amount of personal turmoil you’ve been plunged into with the events of this season, I’d say you deserve a little time off. Take a break, relax, read a book, maybe watch some other sport infinitely more boring and futile than your true, icy, heartbreaking love. But whatever you do, don’t think about the Stars!

For those on the fence who can’t be bothered to give up hockey completely for bye week and at the same time don’t think they can deal with the stress and constant reminder of potential impending doom throughout the entire week, here is your middle ground: either rewatch some of the Stars’ most thrilling season wins via NHL TV, or find some best goal compilation videos on YouTube.

Stars fan, meet the ultimate hockey security blanket.

High-stress option

Take every moment that would have been occupied by game-watching and stat-checking, and put it to good use to worry about the Dallas Stars even in their absence. If you can’t go five days without scratching the hockey itch, you’ve still got options.

Follow some of the teams standing in the gap between the Dallas Stars and that elusive, mythical thing shrouded in mystery, the Wild Card playoff spot.

Out of the four teams that are between Dallas and that last playoff spot, only two have already taken their break and will play through the week (L.A. Kings and Calgary Flames), while on will start its bye week in just a few days (Winnipeg Jets).

Also, don’t forget that the two teams that are nipping at the Stars’ heels to overtake them in the standings– the Coyotes and the Avalanche- have already had their bye week and will be playing through this week as well. More fodder for the cannon of emotional destruction aimed at your well-being and happiness? I do believe so.

The ultimate recommendation for the hockey-starved Stars fan? Keep your eye on these team’s games. Whether the results will find the Stars inching closer to or further away from the Wild Card spot is yet to be determined, but keep in mind that whatever the outcome- painful or not- this is the sport you’ve chosen to love. Accept it, and go find another game to watch.
