Dallas Stars Fans Should Start New Traditions in 2017-18 Season

Around the NHL, there are a number of recognizable traditions. Certain songs signify being in one city or another. Some teams have dances their fans partake in during certain parts of the game. The Dallas Stars could use some of that in the upcoming season.

The Dallas Stars are a potentially great team with a great fan base. However, as far as traditions go, they’re rather lacking. A few old ones have since been retired – or should be – meaning the road is paved for new ones to arise.

Goal song celebrations

Before the Stars had their own personalized goal song, fans would pump their fists toward the sky during the old version. This was an impressive view from the crowds, on the ice and certainly via televised events; however, it has since faded away with the emergence of the new song.

While it’s great to have a customized goal song that is unique to the team, not having an organized way of celebrating Stars goals on home ice could be a great opportunity.

Whether that’s fans all high-fiving or another gesture is done during every game, it’d be great to see fans – old and new – all do the same thing. Last season, it was quite a jumbled mess during celebrations, and while it’s great to get caught up in the excitement, having some cohesion would be nice.

Power play chant

Another opportunity for fans to impact the game is when the Stars get on the power play. Some fans complete Jeff K’s line of “Your Dallas Stars are on the” by yelling “power play,” but it seems to be rather few dispersed throughout the American Airlines Center.

This is an easier change than before, being that the Stars have already set up the chance for fans to participate. The words themselves are blown up in big letters on the jumbotron for fans to follow along with, so there’s really no excuse for not following suit the next time you find yourself in victory green at the AAC.

Other opportunities

It’d be great for the Stars to run out onto the ice at home games to the fans doing something. What that should be is up in the air, but something other than cheering and clapping would be nice.

Dallas could use the uniqueness of a song or phrase being associated with them. A few years ago they were the #PeskyStars, an image that clearly depicted the team’s make-up and work ethic. Now as a new club with a different identity, they’re in need of something different. Again, what that is or should be is to be determine; but it’s certainly a part of the brand of Dallas Stars hockey that has yet to be determined.

Ultimately, the Stars feed off of the energy of their fans – especially at the AAC. The crowd serves as a big part of home ice advantage and while Dallas is a great city with superior support, a little uniqueness wouldn’t hurt anyone when it comes to celebrating all that is Dallas Stars hockey.
