The regular season is over and one of the few things that the Dallas Stars can still look forward to is the NHL Awards. Tyler Seguin was nominated for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy by the Stars on Monday and could very well be a finalist.
No Dallas Stars player has ever won the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in the 29 years that it has been awarded. But will that change this summer?
On Monday, the Stars announced that forward Tyler Seguin is their nominee for the King Clancy. Every NHL team nominates one player from their roster, and the three finalists are chosen and announced on April 30.
The King Clancy is awarded annually to the player who “best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community.” And if there is any Stars player that fits this description, it’s Seguin.
The award is more of a “two-part” award, requiring that the recipient both shows solid leadership skills and makes an impact on his community outside the rink. These are both areas in which Seguin is excelling as the years go on.
Blackhawk Up
Since joining the Dallas Stars in July 2013 after being packaged in a trade by Boston, Seguin made an immediate and consistent impact on the Dallas community.
He is consistently active with his charity Seguin’s Stars as well as the Dallas Stars Foundation. He rents out suites for the Dallas Sled Stars hockey team at Stars’ home games and partners with various groups such as the Boys and Girls Club of Collin County, Big Brother Big Sister, the Southwest Wheelchair Athletic Association, and the After School All-Stars.
This past season alone, Seguin donated $40,000 to the Boys and Girls Club of Collin County to build a ball hockey court and refurbish their learning lab. Over the past two seasons, he has donated almost $100,000 to these causes.
The impact he has on the community outside of the game as well as the community at the game is ultimately special. He’s done everything from take part in sled hockey camps to meet with the attendees in his box suite after each game for pictures and autographs.
In February, Seguin also served as the team’s Hockey Is For Everyone Ambassador due to his work in connecting diverse groups of the population using the game of hockey.
So the second part of the King Clancy description is pretty rock solid.

But in terms of being a leader, Seguin took a big step forward in 2017-18. Earning the “A” as one of the four alternate captains this year, he turned into a more complete player on the ice. Not only did he have a career year on the stat sheet, but he also became an effective leader on the ice, on the bench, and in the locker room. He helped younger players out and served in a more vocal role with the team.
All in all, Tyler Seguin seems to be the perfect nominee for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy. At the age of 26, he is already making a sizable impact in the game of hockey, both on and off the ice. It’s hard not to respect a guy when he does all that Seguin has done in the community and still leads his team with strong performances every year.
