After months of fan speculation, the Dallas Stars made public today what their center ice logo will be for the 2018-19 season. It’s a perfect choice for those who love tradition.

A common theme among sports fans is the concept of superstition. Dallas Stars fans are no stranger to this concept.

Whether it’s wearing the same socks on game days, only eating a certain food when at the game, or throwing on your “lucky” shirt or jersey in time for puck drop, most passionate hockey fans have their own specific traditions.

But there are also superstitions within the team. For instance, listening to Shania Twain before a playoff game in 2016 or wearing yellow laces while a hot streak develops are just a few of the superstitions that the Dallas Stars have followed over the past few seasons.

These superstitions can even zone in on the smallest possible factor: how the ice is designed. But more specifically, what the center ice logo looks like. Over the past few years, the Stars have experimented with different designs at center ice. And if you follow superstition, it’s clear that they should have never strayed from tradition.

When the Stars adopted a new logo and color scheme in 2013, they followed the tradition of most NHL teams and used their primary logo (the star outlining the letter “D”) at center ice.

The team ended up using this logo on the ice in the 2013-14, 2014-15, and 2015-16 seasons. Throughout those years, they posted a record of 131-85-30, won the Central Division once, and went to the postseason twice.

But in 2016-17, a change came along. The Dallas Stars switched to one of their secondary logos (the one on the shoulders of their jerseys) to grace center ice. Dallas followed this change up with one of the worst seasons in franchise history, posting a record of 34-37-11 with 79 points and missed the playoffs by 15 points. It was a rough performance that came with an offseason of change.

At the beginning of the 2017-18 season, the Stars celebrated their 25th anniversary in Texas and decided to paint their center ice logo for the occasion. A large “25” was painted in the background with the primary logo centered between the numbers. But the 25th anniversary didn’t necessarily end on a happy note, with Dallas missing the playoffs by a handful of points following a catastrophic final month of the season.

And now that mid-September is here, it’s time for the ice at the AAC to once again be prepared for a new season. But this time, the Dallas Stars are going back to their roots.

The Stars will return back to their original logo at center ice for the 2018-19 season, sticking with the tradition of most of the rest of the league.

So, if you are a fan and follower of superstition, this is exactly the kind of choice that you’ll enjoy. Simplicity is key, especially when it comes with a tradition of winning.
