The Dallas Stars have been busy this offseason. From hosting the Entry Draft in June to personnel changes on the roster, it’s been nothing short of entertaining. Although there have been a number of changes, many things are still up in the air.

On Friday afternoon, the Dallas Stars inked forward Gemel Smith to a new deal through arbitration, rounding out a good portion of the upcoming roster. His one-way contract means he’ll likely be in Dallas for the 2018-19 season. That is, unless something else is in the works.

Seguin Deal

The hot topic right now for the Stars is when they’ll announce re-signing Tyler Seguin. The center has been the team’s most consistent performer over the last few seasons, and getting him locked down for years to come is of utmost priority for Dallas.

He, however, is not going to come cheap. With salary cap ceilings to consider and an understandably strong case from Seguin’s camp to get as much money as possible, it’s no wonder this deal isn’t cut and dry.

But, now that the Stars have sorted out the other main question marks regarding re-signings and team rosters, the new question is what’s to come. Unfortunately, only time will tell.

Possible Trade

And amidst all of the new players either coming to or deciding to stay in Dallas, you have to wonder if there’s a trade in the works. There have been a lot of moving pieces this offseason, but big names are still on the drawing board and up for discussion.

The Stars could certainly be locking down players — like Smith — in order to create an ideal package for a player they really want to acquire. Since there have been reports Dallas is entirely unwilling to trade Miro Heiskanen, getting a player like Erik Karlsson might require them to put together a higher volume deal instead.

For all we know, Smith could very well be part of that.

What’s to Come

The season is only a few short weeks away, and the Stars still have plenty of time to re-sign Seguin before it gets concerning. Of course, getting him inked sooner rather than later saves a lot of headache, but the team probably isn’t upset with the amount of coverage this kind of thing has given them either.

The fact of the matter is, if No. 91 wants to remain a Star, he will. If, however, he doesn’t, there isn’t much that can be done without risking the future of the team.
